Reach this area by clicking Content (menu bar)-Content by section-event log-event log items- then click "log" and "edit". I put these comments throughout the site as it reminds me what to do if I haven't edited the site for sometime.

   1.      29/8/2006 - Purchased a domain site from www.siteground.com for USD118.8. Site is called
www.tafeopenlearning.com and is for 2 years. Very pleased so far. Only a development site.
   2.      29/8/2006 - Installed Moodle to site from Siteground. www.tafeopenlearning.com/moodle/
   3.      29/8/2006 - Installed Joomla to site from Siteground. www.tafeopenlearning.com/Joomla/.
This was an error - see below - should have made Joomla my home page when installing.
   4.      12/9/2006 - Purchased a Joomla template - from www.joomla-templates.com. Cost 23 Euros -
called "action wine" - must have needed a glass of red at the time. Happy with the template.
   5.      17/9/2006 - Installed JCE wysiwyg editor (http://www.cellardoor.za.net/) thinking it could
fix the background colour but didn't. Wrote to joomla-templates and very prompt reply telling
me to click on: - Mambots - change "Template CSS Classes" to No and in "Custom CSS Classes"
enter "css". Fixed the background problem and I ended up with the JCE HTML editor which looks
good. Easy to install - has a tutorial on how to do it. Just download the JCE Components and
JCE Core Mambot and intall them both. Has more features than the "tinyWYSIWYG" html editor
which comes with Joomla - very table oriented.
   6.      20/9/06 - Had a problem with linking to Moodle because I had not made Joomla my home page.
After logging in to Moodle as a guest etc. it reverted back to Joomla as I had diverted my
home page to Joomla. I posted a "Ticket" with Siteground late evening (you get seven a year
apparently - I presume you pay for them after 7) to make Joomla my homepage which was done
the next morning - good service.
   7.      20/9/2006 - Installed Event Calendar - http://forge.joomla.org/sf/projects/eventcal
   8.      30/9/06 - Installed a WebCam to see how easy it is. Pretty easy as it turns out.
Used the program Fwink from http://lundie.ca/fwink/ . Looks a good program. Needed to  put
in the settings for the FTP server - that was my sitegroundxxx.com (where xxx is your allocated
number) and your user name and password you use with siteground. Also need to point to a
directory. I used www/images/ which I then picked up the webcam.jpg photo in Joomla as a URL
(http://www.tafeopenlearning.com//images/webcam.jpg) from a menu item on the main menu.
Eventually will try to replace the WebCam camera with a surveillance camera where I can
check the front door etc. when I am away.
   9.      1/10/06 - Had a problem trying to edit this, or any,  content. The editor would not allow
links or you could not look at the html code, insert symbols etc. The solution is to make sure
when you access your domain you use www, e.g. http:www.yourdomain.com/administator/.
Having the domain prefixed with www is essential.
Don't use http://yourdomain.com/administator/ without the www. It will still access the
site etc. but will create problems.
For example the address for the character map in the editor is located at the following address:
           http://www.tafeopenlearning.com//mambots/editors/jce/jscripts/tiny_mce/themes/advanced/charmap.htm
If you have the wrong address logged in, i.e http://yourdomain.com/ without the www it
cannot find the character map and so on for links, html etc.  I made some changes to the
character map to give more Greek Characters etc.

  10.     3/10/06 - Installed the Mambot WikiBot from http://www.theinevitabledossier.com/wikibot.html
Works well. E.g. hold your cursor over Western Australia then (click) in the welcome page and
it will take you to Wikipedia

11.      General - I found the following from a FAQ useful. It was in response to a question on Sections
and Categories - You can decide what type of content you'll use. The basic things don't change:
You need a content section and some content categories under each section. E.g., you want
to publish some short stories on your site. Go to the section manager and create a new
section called, for example, "Fiction". Then, if you plan to publish different types of
stories, go to the categories manager, select the new section you just created on the
dropdown list ("Fiction") and create some categories like "Science-fiction", "Thriller",
"Romance"... When you want to add a new thriller story to your site, just select
content->fiction and click "New". While inputting the stuff, choose the
category "Thriller" from the dropdown list.
Maybe you would also like a solid link to your newly created section. Go to menu manager,
select "main menu" and add a menu item called (like in our example) "Fiction".
Choose "List - Content section" and then, "Fiction". When you saved it
(don't forget to select "published" option) a new menu item will appear on your main menu called
"Fiction". Click on it, you'll see the list of categories you created: Science-fiction, Thriller,
Romance... Select a category and all the items entered under this category will be listed.
Click one of the items and read it.
You may also want the newly entered items to appear on the frontpage.
Just select "show on frontpage" box on content item screen, and the new items will appear
with their headlines and intro paragraphs on the frontpage, with a link just below them which
reads "continue.." If a visitor would like to read the rest, he/she can click on this link.
When entering the articles, news or other content items, use the double text boxes to define
the intro part and the rest.
Not everything on a web site need to be dynamic. You'll probably also need some static pages,
like "About our company" or "My Biography", or "Privacy Policy" or... so on... You can create
some static pages with Mambo, using the "Static content Manager". Just click "New"
and design your page. If you want to, you can also add a link to it on one of your menus.

This is a development site put together by Ian Moore of  Perth, Western Australia, to try to get a handle on the development of a website using Joomla a Content Management System (CMS) and linking to  Moodle is an open source, e-learning platform (also known as a Course Management System (CMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)). Both these open source programs written in PHP. If you click on the item in the main menu - Event Log - you can follow my progress. It is not connected in any way with an Australian TAFE College and I will change the domain name if this exercise ever progresses to a commercial level.

Over the forthcoming months I will endeavour to develop one or two Units of Competence to some detail using Moodle, plus use this site as a repository of useful links into VTE relevant sites, products, courses etc. If you click on the item in the main menu -  Moodle - and login as a guest you can follow my progress on the first Unit of Competence.
